Curriculum:
ELA -
For grammar, we are concentrating on how and when to use commas. For writing, we are working on persuasive writing, and what makes a good reason or argument. For reading, we continue to work on fluency and comprehension, in addition, we will focus on comparing and contrasting this week. Our story for the week takes place during the Revolutionary War time period, so that ties right in with our Social Studies.
Math -
For math, we have started fractions. Fractions are a huge part of 5th grade curriculum, and we will be spending a lot of time on it. For starters, we are working on simplifying fractions and reviewing what fractions are. Then we move into adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.
Social Studies / Science
We are finishing up our unit on the Colonies, and we will move towards the Revolution. The students do find it all very fascinating.

Math - We will be finishing up chapter 6 this week. This chapter has covered estimating products and quotients of decimal numbers, as well as multiplying and dividing decimals. Joke of the week: Why couldn’t the pirate learn the alphabet? Curriculum info:
Math - We will be multiplying 2 digit by 1 digit, 2 by 2 digit, and 3 digit by 2 digit this week. If they know their basic facts, they are going to catch on right away. If they struggle recalling their facts, it does make the entire process pretty labor intensive. Please encourage them to get on Reflex from your home computer or device. It will help them learn those facts. Thanks!
ELA - For grammar, we will be working with verbs and helping verbs. We will be talking about using the correct verb tense, as well. For writing, we will be starting our personal narratives, which we hope to share with you at conference time. Our story for the week is a nonfiction selection titled: The Quest for the Tree Kangaroo. We will be working on cause and effect relationships within the context of this story.
Science / Social Studies - I believe they are working on matter, and measuring the volume of matter in Science class. In Social Studies, we are still covering the different cultural regions of the Native Americans.

We will typically take a comprehension and vocabulary test on Fridays, but this week we will do the test together to assist with how to look up answers, etc…. We are also reading a bonus novel called The War with Grandpa. They seem to really like the story a lot! It’s one of my favorites!

Friday: No school! Enjoy and early start to your spring break!
What we are learning in MATH:
Our goal is to take our math chapter 11 test on Friday, although if it looks like we need more time, I may push it off to the week we come back from break. During our short 4 day week, we will be reviewing customary units of length, weight, and capacity and how to convert those units. We will also spend a great deal of time converting metric units of length, weight, and capacity. This is actually easier than the customary units once they catch on to moving the decimal point one way or the other. Have them explain our helpful strategy to help us remember. (King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk) J
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
We will be working hard to wrap up our poetry unit before the end or our short week. We will continue to work on a identifying a poems theme as well as comparing multiple themes from more than one poem. We will also be looking at how one stanza relates to another, as well as finding the main idea of a stanza within the same poem, as well as multiple poems.

Friday: Health / final spelling test
What we are learning in MATH:
We are diving right in with our measurement unit. Last week we concentrated on the customary units of length, weight, and capacity. (lbs., inches, quarts, etc…) We did many conversions using those, and now we are moving towards the metric units of measure. These are not as familiar to the students, but we will need to practice a lot, so that they are comfortable with doing the conversions for those as well. Any practice at home is greatly appreciated! J
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
We will take the writing state assessment this week on Monday and Tuesday. Our focus from now until spring break will be on reading poetry and dissecting the stanzas for main idea and comparisons. We will also dabble in some poetry writing. J

Wednesday: Music / PE / library / Counselor / Homework due
Thursday: Music / PE
Friday: PE / Music / IDEA field trip
What we are learning in MATH:
We just finished our Chapter 10 math test on Friday and we will work on corrections on Monday. A few students got a little confused on dividing fractions with the use of models. So, I will do some reteaching on that skill and then we are moving on to chapter 11. Chapter 11 is our measurement unit. It covers measuring and converting length, weight, and capacity. Both in in customary units, as well as the Metric units.
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
We will be working really hard on our note taking and responding to prompts with informational text. We have been doing many activities in groups, and we will move to independent work this week. We will finish up with Tuck Everlasting, and work on Istation this week. (Computer reading program) Thanks for avoiding appointments at those important state assessment times.

What we are learning in MATH:
We are multiplying and dividing fractions in math class. We have used models and fraction bars to show it, but we are now moving to being able to work them using the reciprocal strategy. Please continue to reinforce fraction concepts at home. Maybe put them in charge of baking some cookies or a cake, and then tell them to double or triple the recipe. That is a great real life fraction connection! (Standards: 5.NF.6,7)
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
We will finish up our comma unit this week, and we will be focusing on taking notes after reading several selections on the same topic. Then we perform a writing task that correlates to the selections. Some students will be writing a narrative piece, some will be writing a opinion/argument piece, and some an informative piece. We are trying to expand our writing to include the evidence from the text and good descriptions. For reading we will be finishing up our shared read of Tuck Everlasting. (Standards: L5.2, 3)

What we are learning in MATH:
In math this week we will be finishing up chapter 3, division with a one digit divisor. We will focus on placing the first digit, quotients with zeroes, and reviewing the entire division process. We will take a test on Friday, the 30th. We will then continue with division with 2 digit divisors. Thanks for reinforcing the facts at home. It really helps! (Standard 5.NBT.6)
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
We will be working with prepositions and prepositional phrases in Language Arts this week. During the writing portion, we will do more quick writes, and response to literature. We continue to work on literature circles during reading time. The students are loving lit circles, and seem to be engages and enjoying discussing their book! (Standard SL.5.1, 1a, 1b, 1c, RL 5.1, L. 5.5)
What we are learning in MATH:
We will focus on reviewing fact families, estimating quotients, and working on long division. We will mostly focus on 1 digit divisors this week, but please know that 2 digit divisors will follow. Long division can be tedious for some students, and it really makes it easier if they know their facts. Please practice at home, if they are struggling. There are so many places for errors to be made, so students will be reminded to slow down, and double check their work. (Standard 5.NBT)
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
Having finished our personal narratives, we will do some quick writes and journal prompting for writing this week. We will be working with prepositions in language arts. During our reading block, we will be continuing on with our literature circle groups. We had to put these on hold due to me being out with my son’s injury. So, we will be covering those speaking and listening standards, among others…. A Time for Andrew is a great novel that has just enough spooky in it to be a great read this time of year. The time travel piece is also interesting for the students. (Standard SL.5.1, 1a, 1b, 1c, RL 5.1, L. 5.5)
School News…..
What we are learning in MATH:
In math this week we will be finishing up chapter 2 (multiplication of whole numbers). We will be multiplying 2 digits by 1 and 2 digits. Mostly the errors I see are either not knowing their facts, or they can’t read their own writing and haven’t lined up their problem correctly. Please assist at home. We will take a test over this chapter on Thursday. (Standard NBT.5) Division comes next…..
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
We have finished our rough drafts of our personal narratives, so we ill edit and type our final copies this week for writing time. We will also work with nouns, common and proper during Language Arts. We will be starting a new novel in reading, and we will break into groups for literature circles. Each day the students will be responsible for doing their job/role and come prepared to discuss the book the next day during lit. circles. This does take some training, so we may move a bit slower here at the beginning of lit circles. (Standard SL.5.1, 1a, 1b, 1c, RL 5.1, L. 5.5)

What we are learning in MATH:
School News…..
What we are learning in MATH:
This week we will start our unit on multiplication. We will start with prime factorization, and learning about exponents. We will talk about the powers of 10, and then move towards longer multiplication problems. All along the way we will be noticing patterns in our problems. (Standard 5.NBT.2A)
What we are learning in ELA (English, Language Arts):
Remember that we will do a spelling pretest on Tuesdays, and then a final spelling test on Fridays. During our Language block we have started a personal narrative. We will work through the entire writing process with these papers. We also will be focusing on idioms and doing some fun things with those. During reading we are still working on citing our evidence when working on comprehension strategies. This is super hard for them. (Standard RI 5.7, RL 5.4, W 5.3)
